Trancoso is an old fishing village which, with the arrival of tarmac just as recent as 2000, has become a famous and chic resort, centred on the quadrado (village green) with its simple, whitewashed, 16th-century Jesuit church at the far end. Huts have been converted into galleries, ateliers, boutiques, bars, cafes, pousadas (B&Bs) and designer hotels and whilst a bit sleepy by day the village becomes alive in the evening when the shops and restaurants open up, torches and candles are lit, a drum circle strikes up and capoeira dancers take over.
Trancoso is about 45 minutes drive from the bungalow.
